About Chikungunya

"Chikungunya is an epidemic caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. The name "chikungunya" comes from Swahili, meaning "that which bends up" and refers to the stooped posture of the victims, unable to move normally. The disease is mainly found in Africa, South East Asia, South India and Pakistan. It is more active during the summer season when mosquitoes’ concentration is at its highest.” see this document.

This virus has been present in Africa for the last 30 to 40 years. There are cases even in California. In 2005, more cases have been seen in Reunion Island, and a few in Mauritius.

In April 2005, we held a conference in Reunion Island and no problems related to this virus were reported by the conference attendees.

All the reports we have say "There is no reason to postpone your visit to Mauritius "

We are watching closely; we are discussing with local people and any special information, if any, will be available when registering at the conference desk.

It is advised to have a mosquito repellent spray. Once in Mauritius, we will have more information from the hotel personnel.
