Dr. Shikharesh Majumdar

Dr. Shikharesh Majumdar is a Professor and the Director of the Real Time and Distributed Systems Research Centre at the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. He represents Carleton University in the board of management for the Huawei-TELUS Centre of Innovation for Enterprise Cloud Services that focuses on collaborative research among Huawei, TELUS and Carleton University. Majumdar is a member of the faculty team actively involved with Carleton University’s Canada-India Centre for Excellence. He holds an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in Computational Science from University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Canada. Before his graduate studies in Canada he did a Bachelor of Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Computer Science (hardware) from Jadavpur University in India and completed the Corso Di Perfezionamento (Master’s in Engineering) in Electro-techniques (Communication) from Politecnico Di Torino in Italy. Majumdar has worked at the R&D Wing of Indian Telephone Industries (Bangalore) for six years. His research interests are in the areas of cloud and grid computing, operating systems, middleware and performance evaluation. Majumdar actively collaborates with the industrial sector and has performed sabbatical research at two different companies. He is the area editor for the Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory journal published by Elsevier. Majumdar is a member of ACM and IEEE and was a Distinguished Visitor for the IEEE Computer Society from 1998 to 2001.

Majumdar has been active in distributed system research focusing on resource management and performance for the last twenty five years. He has authored over 100 refereed papers/book chapters on these topics two of which have won awards in international IEEE conferences. He has been actively researching resource management, performance and inter-operability issues in the context of grids and clouds for the past ten years. His research projects on cloud resource management is supported by the Natural Sciences and Research Council of Canada (NSERC), on a cloud for unifying resources for sensor-based bridge infrastructure management is supported by the Ontario Centers of Excellence (OCE) and Cistel, and on techniques for achieving end-to-end service level agreements and power aware resource management on data centre clouds is supported by Huawei and TELUS. He is the primary investigator for a Research Excellence Fund project on cloud-based smart facilities management supported by Carleton University. In addition to various conference presentations, Majumdar has delivered invited talks on resource management on clouds at a number of conferences including International Conference on Advances in Cloud Computing (2012), TELUS Technology Summit (2011), and Recent Trends in Information Systems (ReTIS 2011). Majumdar has also given a three day faculty training course on Advanced Distributed Computing (that included resource management on clouds and grids) to computer science professors at Mody Institute of Technology and Science in India. A detailed list of his papers and presentations is available from www.sce.carleton.ca/faculty/majumdar/publications.html.

Majumdar actively participates in the organization of conferences. He was the general chair for the 12th IEEE/ACM International Conference on Cluster, Cloud and Grid Computing (CCGrid 2012), the general chair for the ACM International Workshop on Software and Performance (2007) and the Program Co-Chair for the IEEE International Symposium on Modeling, Analysis and Simulation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (MASCOTS 2002). He was the workshop co-chair for MASCOTS 1998 and is a co-organizer of the workshop Cloud for Business Industry and Enterprises (C4BIE 2013). Majumdar is a member of the steering committees of IEEE/ACM CCGrid and ACM International Conference on Performance Engineering (ICPE). He has been participating in the program committee of a number of international conferences including IARIA’s CLOUD 2013.
